Buy a filter when you need the documented replacement cartridge for your machine.
Buy the approved descaler when the machine calls for its descaling programme. These products do different jobs, so the presence of a filter does not decide every future maintenance task.
Understand what the product actually is
Philips AquaClean CA6903/10 is a water-filter reference. De’Longhi DLSC500 is a descaling solution. Breville SP0022472 is a filter holder kit: ordering that holder alone does not provide a new cartridge.
A product called “filter” may also be a metal basket that holds ground coffee. The Breville Gold Tone filter for BDC415/BDC465 belongs to drip brewing, not to the machine’s water treatment. Look at the component’s job as well as its name.
Read the maintenance prompt before shopping
A descale prompt calls for the specified programme and rinsing sequence. A filter replacement prompt calls for the correct cartridge and any activation steps. Treat a coffee cleaning prompt as a separate decision again.
The ECAM22.110 procedure instructs owners to remove an installed water filter before descaling. Follow the instructions for your own machine rather than transferring that step, dose or button sequence to another brand.
Compare packs only after confirming the reference
A single cartridge and a multipack may solve the same replacement need. A bundle containing cleaning tablets and descaler solves several different needs. Read every included reference; a larger pack is useful only if its components are correct for the machine.
